Back in 1963, when Brooke Russell Astor decided it was time to cut the Astor ties in Rhinebeck, she sought out Homer Sr's Real Estate services to liquidate the 2800-acre estate known as Ferncliff. As a boy, Homer played on the Estate and Capt. Jack Astor actually ended up purchasing Homer's Grandfather, Charlie Staley's Farm that was located close to the Estate on the old abandoned "Tator Hill Rd". Homer loved this part of Rhinebeck and approached Brooke and asked her to donate 200 of the 2800 acre estate located at the corner of Mt Rutsen Rd & River RD to the Rhinebeck Rotary to be used as a Forever Wild Game Refuge and Forest Preserve commonly known today as Ferncliff Forest.
